National Healthy Skin Month – Skin Pen – The State-of-the-Art in Skin Repair

skin penWhat is SkinPen and how does it work?
SkinPen by Bellus Medical is a medical-grade, state-of-the-art precision tool available through skincare professionals only. It is designed to address acne scars, the symptoms of aging skin, and to increase the efficacy of topical skin care products. SkinPen is designed to stimulate your skin’s natural ability to produce new collagen formation, creating healthier skin, therefore, plumping lines and wrinkles. This repair process is accelerated by SkinPen through the formation of microscopic channels, which also allow products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.

What are the benefits?
Patients enjoy numerous benefits through SkinPen’s micro channeling process, because new collagen production can reverse years of sun damage, improve acne scars, diminish fine lines and wrinkles and enhance the overall appearance of aging skin. Most patients see marked improvement with only one treatment and most skin care needs and goals met after only 3-4 treatments.

Who is a candidate?
One of the most exciting things about SkinPen is that it can be used on all types of skin to address a wide range of problems, including acne scars and any area requiring cell regeneration or an intense repair process.

What areas of the body can be treated?
SkinPen is extremely versatile and can be used on all parts of the body, face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, and back. This versatility makes SkinPen especially helpful when addressing acne scars on the back and stretch marks on the body.

How is the procedure done?
A sterile, disposable cartridge containing 12 tiny micro-needles is attached to the tip of a pen. A thin layer of topical serum is applied to the skin, and the appropriate micro channeling treatment is selected for a particular type of skin. Then the pen is glided across the targeted repair area in a gentle motion.

What does it feel like?
The unique design of the SkinPen allows for individual settings in which most patients state the treatment is very relaxing. Topical Lidocaine (Numbing cream) is applied to treatment area for 30 minutes prior to procedure.

How long does the procedure take?
The procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending upon the size of the area and the severity of the skin damage.

What is the downtime?
Immediately following the treatment, you will notice a healthy pink glow. Your skincare professional will recommend product protocols to aid your skin’s natural healing process. Total healing time depends on the severity of the damaged skin and the depth of the repair process required. On average, patients are pink for two to four days. Some patients heal completely in 24 hours.

When will I see the results?
Most people notice healthier-looking skin immediately. However, the natural repair process of your own skin continues to progress over the course of several weeks. Dermal collagen remodeling takes place over time and it will continue to improve for up to six months after your final treatment.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will be determined by your skincare professional based upon your individual treatment goals and the health of your skin. However, it is recommended that most patients receive a series of three treatments spaced about four weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo aging, stretch marks, or acne scars,  the recommendation is to receive six to eight sessions at four-to-six week intervals.
