At the Y, a supportive community is a big part of wellness. At every age and every level of activity, you’ll find people just like you looking to live a little bit healthier. Members and program participants often cite the support and enthusiasm of fellow participants and staff as some of the key factors in their achievement of greater well-being.
Because we know that healthy lifestyles are achieved through nurturing mind, body and spirit, well-being and fitness at the Y is so much more than just working out. Beyond the facility, we provide social areas to interact with new people, play ping pong or foosball, drink coffee, or read the newspaper, and offer several wellness challenges throughout the year that support physical, intellectual and spiritual strength.
Wellness is about being well across all aspects of your life. No matter your age, background, gender, or socioeconomic status, we all have a basic need to be acknowledged and accepted by others. That’s why it’s so critical for the Y to encourage an environment based on the principles of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
When you enter the Y, we have the expectation that you will feel comfortable in the physical space but also feel welcomed by staff and other members. In the morning hours, you might see people sipping coffee and reading the newspaper after their exericse, getting ready to start their day. Around lunchtime, you might see moms giving their young kids lunch before heading into the pool. In the afternoon, teenagers start to drift in to do homework or play basketball. By evening, it’s a true mixture of every age exercising, talking, and just hanging out.
Exposure to people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and walks of life, makes the Y a unique organization in which to be a part. The challenges and blessings you receive can serve to give you a fresh perspective on life. We hear about the “extras” from our members all the time.
